Charanga Privacy Notice: Information for children and young people

This privacy information is written for children and young people whose teachers use Music First Elementary and for children and young people who use Yumu, Music First Elementary’s online learning space for students.

Children have the same privacy rights as adults. A Privacy Notice tells people how organizations use the information they hold about them.

If anything is unclear, ask your parent, guardian, or teacher to help explain it and make sure you understand how we use your personal information.

Who we are

Charanga Ltd is a company based in the UK that provides an online platform for school music teaching and learning. Charanga hosts Music First Elementary in the US.

What is personal data, and what personal data do we collect about you?

‘Personal data’ is what we call any information that can identify you. For children and young people using Charanga, this includes your name, your school's name and address, and your class or group name. Teachers use lists of student names to help them organize lessons.

Some teachers might give students a Yumu account. Yumu is Charanga’s special online space for students. If you have a Yumu account, you use your own username and password to log in and save your work.

We don't collect personal data directly from children and young people under 18.

We don’t collect sensitive information about you, and we won’t ask for it.

How we keep your information safe

The law says that we must do all we can to keep your information private, safe and secure.

We use secure computer systems, and we make sure that all personal data is kept safely. This includes taking great care with our system passwords, which we change regularly.

What we do with your information

We can only use your information if we have a good reason and as long as it doesn’t affect your rights. This is called our 'legitimate interests'.

Our good reason for using your personal information is so that you and your teachers can access our website and the Charanga platform with Yumu to create, work on, and store files. We also use it to provide technical support to your teacher or school. You can ask your teacher for more details.

Who we share your information with

We share your personal information to help you and your teachers use our website and the Charanga platform with Yumu or if we have to by law.

If you want more details, you can check our Privacy Notice or ask your parents, guardian, or teacher.

How long we keep your information for

We've carefully considered how long to keep personal data and believe it should only be for a time you would find reasonable or where we have to because of the law, and then we delete it. We have a list of how long we keep all our information and what we do with it when its time is up. We keep our systems very safe, just like you would expect us to.

Your rights

You have rights over your personal information, which is good to know.

In the US, children (minors) are protected by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) as well as other laws which may vary from state to state. You can find out more about COPPA here:
